South Jersey Ports welcomed local and regional leaders, stakeholders, clients, and tenants to a well‑attended open house designed to deepen community partnerships and highlight the organization’s renewed strategic direction under its new Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, Dave Mayer.
The event marked an important milestone as Mayer continues meeting with employees, community leaders, and industry partners to align shared goals and reinforce a cooperative spirit across the region. Since assuming the role on March 1, Mayer has emphasized collaboration, transparency, and a commitment to ensuring that the port’s growth reflects both economic opportunity and community priorities.
“Our future depends on strong relationships with our workforce, our neighbors, and the businesses that rely on us,” Mayer said during the event. “This open house reflects our commitment to building a port system that is sustainable, community‑focused, and positioned for long‑term success.”
Key Priorities Outlined by CEO Dave Mayer
Sustainability and Green Initiatives: South Jersey Ports is accelerating efforts to modernize operations and reduce environmental impact. This includes the electrification of cargo‑handling equipment and the development of a comprehensive energy master plan to guide long‑term sustainability investments.
Increased Community Engagement: Mayer emphasized the importance of being a strong community partner. In addition to a robust community outreach effort, the port is implementing a new initiative to offer on‑site truck driver training courses for Camden residents, expanding access to family‑sustaining job opportunities at South Jersey Ports and supporting local workforce development.
Efficiency and Modernization Through Rail Improvements: With support from a newly awarded grant, the port is advancing its on‑terminal rail upgrades that will expand distribution options for shippers and suppliers. These improvements will enhance cargo efficiency, reduce truck traffic, and support more sustainable freight movement.
Growth of the Steel Business: South Jersey Ports continues to strengthen its position in the steel market. The organization is working to transition winter steel into a year‑round product line. Over the past year, the port has added 60,000 square feet of storage capacity, deployed electric cargo‑handling equipment, and advanced rail infrastructure improvements to support this growing sector.
A Unified Path Forward
The open house underscored the port’s commitment to collaboration, operational excellence, and community partnership. Under Mayer’s leadership, South Jersey Ports is aligning its strategic priorities with environmental responsibility, economic growth, and regional engagement.
“We are building a cohesive vision for the future—one that strengthens our operations, supports our communities, and ensures that South Jersey Ports remains a vital economic engine for decades to come,” Mayer said.
